Volunteer Search Information

" Search volunteers should be in good health. If a volunteer has any medical issues that may cause a potential health risk, they should not participate in the search. The search will not be a "walk in the park", it is strenuous work. Much of the terrain is rugged with thick brush and wetlands. There is also a huge area of less rugged terrain along power lines that will have to be searched as well. This may be a better choice for a search volunteer that is in good health but not certain that they can meet the demands of the rugged terrain. Please inform us prior to organizing the search teams on the day of the search."

CLOTHING/GEAR
• Searchers should have proper clothing.
• A change of dry clothing is also suggested.
• You should be wearing durable/heavy pants (not sweat pants) that will not rip or catch on brush or thorns. Pants that will give you protection such as jeans. Searchers should wear "gators" or "upland game" pants if you have them or you can wrap duct tape around the bottom of your pant legs to prevent insects, particularly tics, from entering. Searchers should also use insect repellent.
• A warm shirt and windbreaker or fleece top and vest, wool shirt, etc. will be OK if the weather is fair. You should also bring a warm jacket to put on after you stop the search. You will perspiring and will get cold when you stop.
• A hat or baseball type cap that will protect your head from sun, rain, branches, etc. is also needed. A bright color such as HI VIS green or Orange would be best for visibility.
• Gloves should also be worn for protection against branches, thorns, etc.
• Protective glasses or sunglasses should be worn for eye protection against branches.
• Footwear is very important. A good hiking type boot (waterproof is best) with ankle support is necessary. Sneakers are not a good choice. They will not give you any ankle support and your feet will get wet. A pair of rubber boots are also recommended due to wet areas and a potential rainy day.
• Rain gear is a must if the forecast calls for rain.
• A "walking stick" would be very helpful for poking around in the grass/leaves, etc.
• A "fanny pack" or "back pack" will be helpful to carry supplies, water, candy bar, etc.
• There will be no smoking at the staging area or on the search line.
• Do not litter. We do not want to contaminate the search areas with anything. Whatever you bring into the woods comes back with you and properly disposed of.
• Searchers are asked not to relieve themselves in the woods. Appropriate facilities will be available at the staging areas.
• No cameras will be allowed at the staging area or on the search line unless authorized.
• Cell phones should be shut off when on the search line.
• Every line search team will have a team leader. The search team leader and the search command post will have communication. The command post will have a list of all searchers and their team leaders in the event that a searcher has to be contacted.

• This is a "rain or shine" commitment.
